One of our most commended sessions
Bystander Intervention
Most people want to do something when they witness unwanted behaviour. What stops them is not indifference. It is not knowing how, or fearing they will make it worse. This course changes that. People leave knowing exactly what they would do, because they have already done it in the room. Anyone can be a bystander, whatever their seniority or place in the hierarchy.

Freezing is normal. It is also fixable.
The bystander effect and diffusion of responsibility are well documented psychological patterns, not personal weaknesses. The more people who witness something, the less any one person feels responsible for acting, and the fear of making things worse keeps good people frozen in place. This course moves people past that, through practice, not passive watching.
What it covers
From understanding the freeze to acting past it.
Understanding bystander behaviour
What stops people stepping in: the bystander effect, diffusion of responsibility, and the fear of getting it wrong.
The 4 D’s of intervention
Direct, Distract, Delegate, Delay, and how to choose safely between them in the moment.
A trauma-informed approach throughout
Woven into every part of the course, not bolted on at the end.
Reading a situation and intervening safely
Including how to step in across power dynamics and hierarchy.
Digital bystandership
Recognising and responding to unwanted behaviour on Teams, Slack, and other platforms.
Escalation and reporting
And the importance of agency and autonomy for the person affected.
Building real confidence
Through realistic, contextual examples and scenarios, not hypotheticals.
The difference in how we teach this
Practise it for real.
This course is built on practice, not theory alone. Once a safe environment has been established, participants take part in role play to rehearse real intervention, in the room, with support close by.
We also integrate Scenari, our sister platform, on the day, so people can digitally practise being a bystander as if they were on Teams, Slack, or another platform. They leave having actually done it, not just heard about it.
Who it’s for
Anyone and everyone.
Anyone can be a bystander, regardless of seniority or organisational hierarchy. The course can be tailored to different audiences, from whole-workforce sessions to leadership groups.
